Here we see the bridge being removed, biggest issue was liability and of cou...

Omg the go train cars on ACE.... this hits different man. Thanks for documenting this
And now it’s going to be a electrified high speed corridor one day (if CAHSR ever gets done)
8:09 the old Paul Avenue Station platforms in San Francisco. That station shut down two years after this video was made in 2005 due to low ridership. The platforms thereon have since been removed.
@@munimathbypeterfelton6251 Funny, one would think engineers forget to stop here, I never did, but did happen occasionally. I blew through Atherton one might, didn’t realize it till we were halfway past the yard, lucky no one wanted on/off, lucked out, just had a longer dwell in RWC.
Nice view. Are you a train operator?
@@ethantlyu Retired Amtrak Engineer.
The much better days on the Peninsula
A fantastic layout and some of the conversation going on in the background hahhaa.....
Do they go faster in the tunnel
Now they do.
Do you have any pictures from trainorders that aren’t low quality I can see from the CTX oroville runs? Because I don’t have a trainorders account and it’s basically just paying 30 bucks to a dead website at this point.
Just what’s up there, I put low res up on TO because of people stealing photos to use elsewhere. I do have hires images, I’ve been rescanning everything a little at time. TO also messed with the resolution on photos compressing them to load faster. I don’t blame you on not wanting to pay a membership fee, it’s up to $30 now, everything’s going up! I haven’t been on TO for years, I let the membership lapse.
@@straightto8 yeah I’d assume you’d be outta your TO acc by now but I was just wondering, thanks
@@straightto8 I lived right by the Dumbarton line and I wanted to show the photos people got like shed47 got to my parents and they’re just unrecognizable at this point.
@@Lorsterthe34st Eventually some of my photos will be on The Dome of Foam web site when I send some his way, also another retired Caltrain engineer.
This was back when Amtrak ran these trains right? Before TASI? I assume it still pays like a slot machine. Talk about a contract everyone would love for them to get back. 😁
Yes, this was during the Amtrak era, there was lots of $$ to be made at that time, that’s for sure. Now the pay is greater, jobs aren’t as lucrative, some are and some aren’t, though I hear from friends still working there about some of the choice assignments being lucrative. If I didn’t have to leave Amtrak due to my work injury, I probably would have just stood with Amtrak and work out of Oakland where I started. Yes, would be nice to see Amtrak get it back. I think they (JPB) were shortsighted when they retained TASI, but the worker bees don’t call those shots.
Nicely done!
Nice video, did you ever see anyone actually using Broadway or Paul Avenue stations before they closed?
Yes, I’ve stopped at Paul Avenue several times before it closed at much was not more than 4-5 would get off. Broadway stopped there tons of times, Atherton too, and College Park.
Broadway isn't closed@@straightto8
If, while there, and began to smell smoke and sensed the faint pounding of locomotive drivers...I'd damn sure jump the hell off that trail !
15:07 - I used to come to this crossing (San Mateo Ave) all the time in K and 1st grade to watch trains with my dad in 2007/2008 back when the street still crossed the tracks diagonally, but the crossing adjacent to that (San Bruno Ave) was a dangerous interaction with the RR crossing between two traffic lights and a list of crashes occurred there because of confusion caused by that intersection. In the early 2010s, the tracks were raised about 13 feet above the roads in San Bruno as part of a grade separation project to remove those crossings, so this shot is impossible to get anymore
WOW that brings back memories. At least you didn't have the exhaust to worry about. Try doing that in tunnels 2 & 3. Same project.
I’ve worked with MofW dumping in the tunnels, all of them, #4 was the worse being the longest. Use to come out looking like a powdered donut, and covered with soot from the exhaust. We hated it, I use to get nose bleeds when we worked in them tunnels. Amtrak MofW crews didn’t screw around when they dumped rock, it wasn’t walking speed with them, it was jogging speed. The contractors I’ve worked with, some were good, some were bad, just depended on the equipment they were using. I was there on train crew for Bonanza, Ponderosa, CTX North and South projects.
This being at Redwood City, I heard on trainorders that Caltrain used to do a “Mt Chilco” run on the Dumbarton line from 2008-2012 on Saturday mornings to deliver ballast to redwood junction, the cars being owned by Caltrain would always come back.
They were stock piling ballast at the end of branch, and they were transloading it back into the JPBX or Caltrain owned ballast cars. They were doing that for a while, I guess it just depends on the project going on. I was out of there by 2009 so I don’t know what they have cooking now.
when was the video filmed
2000
If I were the conductor on the train, I would’ve announced the upcoming stop, and at Redwood City and Menlo Park stations, I would’ve announced that after Menlo Park, the train would go to Mountain View, then Lawrence, then Santa Clara, and then make all local stops to Gilroy except for College Park. I would’ve announced that if passengers were going to a station that 276 wouldn’t stop at, there was a train right behind us that they could transfer to at Redwood City or Menlo Park.
Engineers aren’t responsible for announcements, that’s the conductors job.
@@straightto8 how come I didn’t hear any announcements from the conductor?
@@dannyluo2077 Because the engineers don’t make announcements as I said, engineer runs the engine.
@@straightto8 in the engine, can you hear the conductor’s announcements?

Sounds like 913s old P2
Did you work there long enough to operate the MP-36s?
I started with Amtrak in 98’, bounced between Oakland and San Francisco, when I got promoted to engineer it was on the commutes. And yes, I was there working when they were delivered new, blows my mind that they are 20 years old already and have been rebuilt (not all), I remember that new paint smell they had.
Sure miss seeing Milwaukee Road , they had equipment all around Great Falls .

We can all just imagine the Hiawatha speeding through those hills
Are you still a caltrain engineer or no more
No, got hurt, left for medical reasons.
... cool ...
Reminds me of when they put new tracks nearby. They used a really long systen that layed stone, droped the supports, followed with track, more stone and cleaned stone off track. The system was about 400, 500 feet long and held all the supplies needed.

Have you got a caltrain Horn show in 2000
@@caltrain_903YTchannel I’m not into the horns, just what’s on the videos posted.

I have somewhere on my tapes is a night time run-by at Hayward Park of the Caltrain GP9’s and 30 empty coal cars that were being used for ballast, this was in 2000/01 sometime. Another run-by of the light power up at Bayshore, got the engineer to sound the horn, was a neat clip, hope to find them some day to share.

@@caltrain_903YTchannel Ok….
@@caltrain_903YTchannel Only thing I ever noticed about the horns were the differences on the switchers, there was a P-3, and a UP type that was loud when it wasn’t clogged. And the P-3’s on the GP9’s, otherwise it was the same two-chimes, some louder than others, some with more or less reverb. Except the one time when I was a new engineer I had one of the Bombardier cars from Sounder that still had the 5 chimes, I got reprimanded for making too much noise too, lol. Otherwise I don’t know much about the horns.
